Yago to Arkansas

    Fort Smith Commissary

Our first step started in Fort Smith, Arkansas.  Fort Smith was the furthest outpost for U.S. western expansion and also the beginning of the "Trail of Tears". We shot extensive video of the old fort and started west.  Our first days drive took us to Spiro Mounds, Tamaha, McCurtain, the Green McCurtain Home (who was the last Chief of the Choctaws), the Stigler Cafe, the Stigler Rodeo, and the Stigler Livestock Auction.  That was day one.  We'll have film later of them all at www.yago.com.
The Poteau River empties into the Arkansas.  Many historians believe that the Poteau was a passage into Eastern Oklahoma.  Evidence the Heavener Rune Stone, which claimed to be navigated by the Vikings around 1000 AD and the French as far back as 600 AD.

Fort Smith, AR, was truly the beginning point for the Indian movement and our trip as well..  The fort was originally built in 1812 and was the furthest outpost for just about any chance of law and order.  So much information is available regarding the history of Fort Smith, we need not detail the history so we'll just provide a short video about the Old Fort Smith and you can search the web and get an enormous amount of data.

Leaving Fort Smith our first encounter with Indian history was Spiro Mounds.  Spiro Mounds, a major hub for the Mississippian Tribe, doesn't really come into our current storyline.  Spiro Mounds was a center for Indian Culture between 600 AD to approximately 1300 AD.  During it's active period around 15,000 Indians occupied the area. Why was Spiro Mounds one of the center's for Indian culture?  The Arkansas River narrowed to a width that enabled control of the river, and thus all points west of the Arkansas River and east to the Mississippi River.
