The
Legend of the Oklahoma State Prayer Beads. In the previous
century in a land far away from the friendly confines of Stillwater an
OSU shaman sat sipping a brandy at an out of the way Gaucho Bar .
The weather that
night was cold and rainy and the bar was empty except for the lone
shaman. Suddenly from out
of nowhere a devilishly handsome dark skinned man appeared and sat down
next to the OSU shaman. The shaman noticed
the well-dressed man to be holding a silver inlaid set of prayer beads. The shaman
commented to the stranger about the beauty of the prayer beads.
Without any hesitation he handed them to the shaman and said take
them they are yours but use them wisely and their magic only works once
a year. The stranger paid
for his drink and my brandy and disappeared as quickly as he appeared. The shaman was left
holding the beads and the soothing brandy, and was amazed at his good
fortune. At that point he
had no understanding of the strangers' prayer beads powers. Over the next few
years during the shaman's travels, he occasionally used the beads for
chanting but really never noticed any difference in them from any other
prayer beads. Before the close of
the century his travels lead him back to the Stillwater area during the
annual football game between OSU and OU.
Being of cowboy background he was inspired to use his beads at
the game to try and help OSU at least stay in the football game, which
no one expected. OSU was a
thirty-point underdog all the fans were ready for their normal thumping,
but something happened that day that started the mystery of the OSU
Prayer Beads. As the shaman
started to chant with the beads sitting between three other wise OSU
people the lowly Cowboys started to develop a confidence and intensity
that had been missing for most of the century.
The Cowboys actually not only started to play as well as the
Sooners, but also started to flat out whup their ass.
The game progressed
and it looked indeed as the lowly cowboys where about to beat the highly
favored Sooners but then something happened.
The end of the prayer beads broke off and thus ended the Cowboys
winning drive with time expiring. The prayer beads
laid idle on the shamans' altar until the next century. With the dawning of the
new century the scenario for the OSU, OU game was similar to the
previous centuries games with the cowboys once again decided underdogs
with no chance of beating the proud Sooner nation, but alas the prayer
beads were brought out once again but with the dangle fixed.
Their power started to immediately affect both teams OSU for the
better and OU for the worse. The
shaman used the beads once again in front of the three wise people and
lo they started to believe in their powers against the mighty Sooners.
The beads worked their magic as long as the Shaman held them (he
sat them down once and the Sooners started to come back and had their
most positive moments in the entire game), the three wise people
requested that the shaman pick the beads back up and lo and behold the
Sooners started collapsing and the Cowboys started soaring.
The better team that day was definitely OSU and the same scenario
set up as in the previous century the cowboys were driving for the win
but instead of their usual choke to the Sooners their luck had changed,
the complete prayer beads rendered them unstoppable and they
marched down the field twice to hand the Sooners their first defeat of
the new century. The beads are kept
now in a safety deposit box and are only pulled out once a year at
football bedlam time. There powers are
not to be doubted and the beads must be held during the entire came for
them to work their magic. The legend continues and not once this century have the Sooners defeated the Cowboys in football a new era of OSU domination has truly started. The prayer beads were once again taken out for the OU vs. OSU basketball game. However they were not used until the Pokes were down by 17 points. From that point on the Pokes climbed back to tie the game but alas because of their late start the pokes lost by 5. If only they had been taken out from the start their magic would have worked again. The second meeting they were broken out for the second half and their magic was too much for the sooners and OU lost in overtime. The prayer bead magic continues.
